Fiji police face funding problems

9:13 am on 30 July 2002

The Fiji government and senior police will have an urgent meeting today to discuss the police department's shortage of funds.

The home affairs minister, Joketani Cokanasiga, says police have asked for an extra 2-point-8 million US dollars to run operations until the end of this year.

Police withdrew security checkpoints from around the parliament complex last Friday because they were unable to pay the officers.

This raised fears among parliamentarians - many of whom were taken hostage in the coup two years ago.

They called for the removal of the police commissioner, Colonel Isikia Savua.

Police also withdrew security from Nadi International Airport as they ran out of funds after spending an extra 100-thousand US dollars on providing nearly 200 extra officers during the recent ACP summit in Nadi.

Poliec have confirmed that their vehicles have been grounded because they are unable to pay for maintenance and tyres and they are considering shutting down police stations for part of the time.
