Retiring Fiji chief justice urges changes to 1997 Constitution

10:45 am on 31 July 2002

Fiji's outgoing chief justice, Sir Timoci Tuivaga, says the 1997 Constitution needs urgent change.

Sir Timoci has told Radio FM-96 some parts of the constitution are highly idealistic and do not suit Fiji.

He says it is the perception of many people that it was imposed on the country too quickly and now Fiji is paying the consequences.

He says this is shown by the large number of constitutional cases brought before the courts by people who are not satisfied with what is going on in the political arena.

RNZI's Fiji correspondent says Sir Timoci has been publicly attacking the constitution right from the time it was unanimously passed by both houses of parliament and the Great Council of Chiefs.

Sir Timoci retires as chief justice today after 22 years in office.

He will be succeeded tomorrow by 46 year old justice Daniel Fatiaki who will be entitled to stay in office for 24 years until the age of seventy.
