Andean Trade Preference Act approved by US Senate

10:00 am on 3 August 2002

Canned tuna from the Andean countries will not be allowed into the United States under the Andean Trade Preference Act, which has just been endorsed by the US Senate.

The House passed the bill last week, and Congressman Falemavaega Eni Hunkin says the measure, which has still to be signed into law by the President, will allow the importing of tuna pouches from the Andean countries.

But Falemavaega says he is pleased that unified efforts were protecting the Territory's canning operations.
