The Guam governor, Carl Gutierrez, is seeking permission from the Legislature to cut government salaries and reduce employee work hours.
He told the Legislature during a budget debate that a slowdown in government revenues requires cutbacks in various departments.
The governor's request comes as the Legislature debates a revised budget request which was lowered from 431.2 million US dollars to 395.5 million.
Governor Gutierrez said that some governments agencies will need to take a 25 percent cut in their budgets, while education will require a 5 percent reduction and health 11 percent.
The Guam Fire department would require a 7.6 percent reduction and the Police Department a cut of 9.4 percent.
