Fiji court martial of alleged mutineers may drag on indefinitely

9:10 am on 10 August 2002

A report from Fiji says the court martial of 15 soldiers charged with the November 2000 mutiny is expected to drag on indefinitely.

Radio Fiji says this follows reports that one of the defence lawyers, Rabo Matebalavu, is medically unfit to attend the court martial at least until September.

Mr Matebalavu has a lung infection and has been advised by his doctors to take three months rest.

Another defence lawyer, Kelemedi Bulewa, has also pleaded sick on several previous occasions leading to lengthy adjournments.

Mr Bulewa has told the court martial he is due to travel overseas again in October for medical treatment.

The court martial has been going on with prolonged adjournments since late last year.
