Fiji police boss says police cannot afford to keep Nadi Airport secure

9:11 am on 10 August 2002

Fiji's outgoing police commissioner, Col Isikia Savua, says Nadi International Airport is unsafe and prone to attacks.

Radio FM-96 quotes Col Savua as saying this is because the government refuses to pay a single cent towards security at the airport despite the global anti-terrorist campaign following the September 11th attacks in the United States.

He says the airport is insecure because police do not have the money to provide the security needed.

Col Savua says the airport currently has one security guard at the main gate after the government tightened up on its budget and refused to allocate funds for airport security.
