Australia's nominee as Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum says it is a marvellous opportunity to serve a region to which he has devoted most of his working life.

Greg Urwin recently retired after a diplomatic career spent almost entirely in the Pacific region.

He says he is happy to be nominated for the post despite criticism from the outgoing Secretary General, Noel Levi, that it will end the tradition that a Pacific Islander holds the top job in the 16 nation body.
