PNG business people say privatisation must continue

Papua New Guinea's Chamber of Commerce says the government should complete the privatisation process of state-owned enterprises.

The Chamber's President, Michael Mayberry, says the new government has little option but to finish off what the previous administration under Sir Mekere Morauta had begun last year.

This comes as Sir Michael Somare announced that it would suspend the sale so that it can review the privatisation.

This includes suspending the confirmed sale of 50.1 percent of PNG Telikom to Fiji's Amalgamated Telecom Holdings for 11 million US dollars.

Mr Mayberry says privatising state-owned enterprises is necessary to stop the continuing decline in public services.

"the quality of the services provided by the government has declined dramatically because of political interference and that is one of the major things that we see that has got to stop what were saying that at the moment it would appear privatization should be concluded"
