Fiji may have a Truth and Reconciliation Commission

3:52 pm on 13 August 2002

The Fiji Government is considering setting up a South Africa style Truth and Reconciliation Commission to reduce racial polarisation which developed after the May 2000 coup.

Radio Fiji says this has been disclosed by the Minister for Information and National Reconciliation, Jo Vosanibula, in a Fijian language programme.

Mr Vosanibula is quoted as saying if such a Commission could bring about reconciliation among the millions of people in South Africa, then it could also work for Fiji with its 800 thousand population.
