NGOs and civil societies want to be part of Forum summit

4:02 am on 14 August 2002

NGOs and civil society groups from the Pacific are pressing to be allowed to participate at the Forum leaders summit due to begin in Suva tomorrow.

Until now such groups have lobbied at the periphery of the summit but have not been allowed into official discussions.

The director of the Pacific Concerns Resource Centre, Hilda Lini, says NGOs and civil society groups should not be shut out.

Ms Lini says they should be allowed to give their views and make an input to the Forum summit.

The Pacific Concerns Resource Centre has campaigned strongly on the nuclear issue and wants the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty strengthened.
