PNG priest in hot water for contesting election

4:00 pm on 16 August 2002

A Catholic priest on the Papua New Guinea island of Bougainville, Father Andrew Bili, has been suspended for two years, for taking part in the Papua New Guinea elections.

There had been reports that Fr Bili defied the orders of the Bougainville Diocese Bishop Henk Kronenberg by standing in the June general elections.

But Fr Bili maintains that Bishop Kronenberg granted him approval.

Fr Bili is one of 15 priests who have caused controversy by standing in the elections.

No formal announcement has been made on the fate of the others.
