Melanesian Brothers have cleared guns from seven Solomons communities

The Anglican Church's Melanesian Brotherhood, whose members have been engaged in the disarmament process in Solomon Islands, says its mission will continue until the community is totally free of guns.

George Atkin reports.

"....going public for the first time since being engaged by the national Government to collect guns from the former militants and police officers, the Brothers say though they are not working towards a set time frame, their mission will continue until the last guns are collected."

The Brothers have so far cleared guns from six villages on Guadalcanal and one on Malaita, the two islands whose former militants were involved in nearly two years of conflict.

The guns from those villages now join the World War Two wrecks in Iron Bottom Sound, off Honiara.

The Brothers have also been involved in trying to remove guns from communities on other islands.

The Brothers say that people are realising that guns cannot offer protection but rather they make the holders a target and enemies of others
