Ghost names boost the PNG Government payroll

4:26 pm on 19 August 2002

It has been revealed that ghost names and double entries on the public service payroll are part of the Government's 255-million US dollar annual wage bill.

The new Public Service Minister, Dr Puka Temu, says he knows that there are a number of ghost names and double entries but he says the office will clean up the situation with a new payroll system.

Dr Temu says right-sizing rather than down-sizing of the 77-thousand strong service should help deal with the government's largest expenditure item.

He says there will be a holistic approach that will present to the nation a leaner, efficent, accountable public service.
