Fiji army fears it may run out of time to prosecute alleged mutineers

A report from Fiji says 56 soldiers charged with attempted mutiny in Labasa during the May 2000 coup, cannot be prosecuted if they aren't tried by court martial within three years.

Radio Fiji says this is according to the manual on military law.

It quotes its sources as saying the army is worried about the prolonged delay in getting the accused before a military court.

The army is therefore speeding up its work for the soldiers who are awaiting court martial in Labasa and will bring them to Suva.

Meanwhile the court martial of 15 soldiers charged with the November 2000 mutiny in Suva, which claimed 8 lives, is dragging on with adjournment after adjournment.

And another 40 Suva mutineers are still awaiting the beginning of their court martial.

However, the army says they want to start another court martial for the remaining suspects and then adjourn it.

Sources says in that way the suspects cannot escape prosecution.
