The Japanese government has agreed to help fund new schools in Solomon Islands.

The money will go to the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security as George Atkin reports.

"Japanese Embassy in Honiara says Tokyo has given the United Nations Trust Fund more than 260-thousand American dollars towards rebuilding the schools damaged by the two year ethnic conflict. It says the funding will also go towards addressing the immediate problems associated with the displacement of students in Guadalcanal province and rebuilding damaged school services. The Japanese Embassy says with the funding new classes and dormitories would be built for Malaita and Western provinces as they are presently overcrowded with new students who fled Guadalcanal because of the ethnic crisis."
