Promise of speedy action on PNG electoral petitions

A judge in Papua New Guinea says election petitions following this year's general election will be determined in record time and without delay.

Justice Mark Sevua, who has been appointed the judge manager of the 2002 election petitions, said such speedy settlements were possible because of a new set of rules set out by the judges.

Justice Sevua said the new regulations were set out in such a way that the courts only had to address the main disputed issues to save time.

He said a total of 58 election petitions had been filed nationwide, of which 48 where in the National Capital District.
