Solomons passport scam under investigation

10:26 am on 3 September 2002

The Solomon Islands government has mounted an investigation into a racket involving the sale of passports to foreigners.

The ministry of commerce, trade and employment is carrying out the investigation after it was alleged that Solomon Islands passports were sold to Asians.

Reliable sources say 10 passports have been sold for 35-thousand US dollars each.

The sources also say the government has not received the money and it's not known who profited from the alleged scam.

It is also not known where the buyers were from and why they chose to get Solomon Islands passports.
