Samoa's population according to the 2001 census stands at 176 thousand 848.

Of that number, approximately 92 thousand are males while almost 85 thousand are women.

The main island of Upolo is the most populous with 134 thousand inhabitants and the smallest inhabited island, Apolima, is home to 88 people.

The government statistician, Sefuiva Reupena Muagututia, says the 2001 Population and Housing census is the first one done without any technical or expert help from overseas.

School inspectors and teachers did most of the fieldwork.
