Niue to formalise New Zealand air link

11:28 am on 6 September 2002

The government of Niue is today expected to confirm that a direct air link has been established to New Zealand.

Polynesian Airlines, which overflies several times a week, will from the end of October fly Auckland-Niue-Apia on Mondays, with a southbound flight leaving Niue each Friday.

The air link is expected to be a significant boost for Niue whose only air link has been a connection with 20- seater turbo prop to Tonga.

Polynesian has agreed to the deal and the Niue Premier, Young Vivian, says there are no sticking points to prevent a formal signing today.

"At this point in time all I want is that I sign the deal, I think my advisers have looked at it and they said that it is a pretty good deal, and I wanted to move ahead as soon as possible."

The New Zealand government has contributed advice and funding to get the link established.
