Solomons compensation funds to be disbursed this week

4:39 pm on 9 September 2002

Thousands of Solomon Islanders are expected to be given compensation payments throughout this week for property lost during the ethnic cnflict.

The disbursements began late last week as George Atkin reports.

"The payments are being made from the last portion of the 50 million American dollar loan from the Taiwanese Exim bank. Claimants rushed to the ANZ bank this morning and began queuing up even before the bank opened its doors, but there are other claimants who have refused to receive the money because their claims have been reduced. Property claimants from the Lau and Bailele constituencies say they want the government to pay them their original claims. The government has not released the shortfall in the claims nor how it will resolve the dispute with Lau and Bailele lost property claimants."
