Fiji's Native Lands Trust Board ready to renew all leases

6:27 pm on 3 October 2002

Fiji's Native Land Trust Board says it is ready to give conditional renewal to all expiring leases.

The Board's public relations officer, Nimilote Naivalumaira, says it would first have to verify the current and future land needs of landowners as laid down in Section 9 of the Native Land Trust Act before renewal can proceed.

Mr Naivalumaira says if the landowners agree to the renewal of expiring leases, then the NLTB will proceed to renew them, and if not then the board will relocate the tenants to alternative land.

"Some of the landowners we are coming across now most of their land has been either leased out and they have no reserve land for their own farming so that's where the problem comes up. Under section nine of the native lands trust act we have to look at the land needs of the land owning units the first one we'll have to consider."
