American Samoa increases allowable election campaign contributions

8:49 am on 12 October 2002

Several technical changes to American Samoa's election laws will apply in this year's elections, including the increase in the ceiling for campaign contributions.

Campaign contributions have increased 150 US dollars to 250 dollars for individuals and 1500 dollars to 2000 dollars for companies.

Also adopted under the new laws is the US government Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act, which would allow uniformed people to register to vote by mail.

Voters used to have to vote physically at the American Samoa Election office.

The changes only apply to the Congressional election and not the governor elections.
