American Samoa fuel shortage continues

6:02 am on 15 October 2002

Fuel continues to be shipped from Samoa to Pago Pago to help with a shortage in American Samoa where the next regular shipment is not due until later this week.

The government of the US territory and Mobil Oil have chartered the MV Naomi vessel for more than 17-thousand US dollars a day to meet some of the motorists' needs.

Petrol stations says they will not open today because there are no guaranteed deliveries although an election candidate, Fagafaga Daniel Langkilde, says both Mobil and BP have assured him that supplies will be back to normal by today.

There have been calls for an investigation to determine why a large fuel shipment could not be unloaded two weeks ago.
