The Fiji Labour Party clashes with the Prime Minister over Suva mayoral race

12:09 pm on 21 October 2002

The Fiji Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, has attacked the Prime Minister for not agreeing to co-operate with Labour councillors on the Suva City Council.

Laisenia Qarase has been reported as saying that such support could set a precedent on which the Supreme Court could base its ruling on the issue of a multi party government.

Mr Qarase told the councillors that the court may take the view that if the SDL and Labour can work together in local government, they can do the same at the national level.

But the Daily Post quotes Mr Chaudhry as saying Mr Qarase is selfish for giving this advice when his SDL councillors want to work together with Labour in local government.

He says the Prime Minister should be aware that the nation requires everyone to work together.
