Anglican plan in Solomons to ordain women

11:16 am on 22 October 2002

The Solomon Islands' Church of Melanesia has plans to ordain women as priests within three years.

This was disclosed by Archbishop Ellison Pogo as the church's general synod got under way near Honiara.

George Atkin reports.

"He says the church will put as an amendment the ordination of women to the general synod to consider. Archbishop Pogo says there are many Anglican women in Solomon Islands who want to work as priests. He says it is high time the prejudice against women in the ministry is ironed out because the church must also respond to the world's new trend of gender balance."
