Solomon Islands treasury closes again after threats by special police

11:15 am on 22 October 2002

The Solomon Islands finance ministry has closed its treasury division because of police threats and harrassment against its staff.

The Finance Secretary, Lloyd Powell, says police special constables went to the finance officers' homes at the weekend and threatened them to give them payments.

The government failed to pay the special constables last Friday.

Mr Powell said due to the law and order problems concerning access to government work places, the treasury has been shut down until further notice.

He says until the staff can work without intimidation, it will remain closed.

The ministry is secured by a razor wire and a second fence while other police provide 24 hour security.

It is the sixth time the treasury has had to be closed this year.
