Fiji's military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, is tipped to relinquish his command to take up a senior position with the United Nations in Kuwait.

Radio Fiji says the UN has offered Commodore Bainimarama command of its forces in Kuwait.

Commodore Bainimarama, who had earlier refused several offers of diplomatic postings by the Fiji government, is reported to have accepted the UN offer.

Radio Fiji says it understands Commodore Bainimarama could resign from his position as early as next month to take up the appointment of two years.

The radio says the ministry of home affairs, which submitted his name to the UN, has not commented on the issue.
