The Niue government says it will not be laying a formal complaint to the U.S. over U.S. navy divers who took action against some local thieves.

Five teenagers are alleged to have stolen 20,000 U.S. dollars worth of property from the divers who were on Niue for three months clearing debris from a wharf at Alofi.

They then apprehended the alleged thieves, beat them up and recovered their equipment.

The high court discharged the three divers without conviction but they were ordered to pay costs of 300 dollars each.

Justin Kampala, the private secretary to the premier, says they've been informed that the three will face military court action back home.

"I don't believe they will be filing a formal complaint in regard to this matter, I believe the matter has been considered closed at this time."

Mr Kampala says police are investigating the actions of the teenagers and charges could be laid.
