Oil spill in American Samoa

6:37 am on 1 November 2002

The United States Coast Guard is investigating a mystery oil spill that has appeared in American Samoa's Pago Pago harbour and the cannery area.

An officer with the Coast Guard estimates the amount of spilled fuel in the ocean to be about 550 litres.

Residents in Pago Pago discovered pockets of fuel near the oil dock in Utulei, the Samoa Packing dock in Satala and a stream that runs through the capital's park .

The Coast Guard has taken samples from two vessels which were refueling last night as well as the spill at the dock area and will send them off island for analysis.
