PNG political party merger not accepted by public official

4:21 pm on 1 November 2002

The registrar of political parties in Papua New Guinea, Paul Bengo, says the merger of the United Party and Pipol's First Party will not be recognised.

Mr Bengo says his office was not officially notified of the proposed amalgamation and he was also not given any evidence of the parties' compliance with requirements of the Organic Law.

The Post Courier says Mr Bengo says the law was very clear on the registration of poltical parties and that no individual or group could declare themselves as a registered political party.

Earlier this week, officials from both parties announced they were forming one party called the Pipol's First United Party, to be headed by Goroka MP Bire Kinisopa.
