The Mayor of Atiu, a southern island in the Cook group, has renewed his campaign against government plans to build a civic centre.

Aneru Tautu wants the money used to improve the islands chronic water supply problems.

He says people are having to cart water using buckets because there aren't enough water tanks and springs.

Mr Tautu says people won't speak out about the issues becuas they're afraid of political victimisation.

More than two hundred thousand US dollars have been set aside for the civic centre, a scheme supported by an Atiu MP and the Minister of Outer Islands Management.

Three thousand has been set aside for Atiu's water project.

The Mayor says 15 thousand dollars would pay for another well and connections that would provide up to ten thousand litres a day
