Solomons phone company under attack from government MPs

11:59 am on 6 November 2002

Solomons Telekom is under fire from government MPs for its use of outdated equipment.

The Association of Independent MPs, the major partner in the ruling coalition, says the government-owned utility has a culture of extravagance, is expensive and does not encourage small businesses to take up its services.

It also says it is unfair for Solomons Telekom to have tax-free status when it is associated with the multinational Cable and Wireless.

The Association also says Telekom has been insensitive to the government's financial and economic hardships by disconnecting its phones.
