Voters in Hawaii have for the first time elected a woman as state governor.

Linda Lingle, a former mayor of Maui, beat her Democrat opponent Lt governor, Mazie Hirono, to also become the first Republican in forty years to occupy the Governor's office.

Mazie Hirono was trying to become the first woman governor of Asian ancestry and the fouth Lt. Governor in a row to ascend to the state's highest office from the No 2 post.
