Former Vanuatu PM to lose parliamentary seat this week

Vanuatu's jailed former Prime Minister, Barak Sope, is expected to formally lose his Parliamentary seat later this week.

Sope was jailed for three years earlier this year after being convicted of fraud.

While Prime Minister he had signed letters of guarantee worth millions of dollars on behalf of the Government, but without first seeking the approval of Parliament.

He will automatically lose his seat if he does not answer a summons to attend Parliament this week.

This however is a matter of procedure since a person found guilty of a criminal offence would be removed from his seat for breaching the leadership code.
