The Australian Government says nearly a third of the people that have been held in their detention centres on Manus in Papua New Guinea and on Nauru, have agreed to return home.

A spokesman for the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs, Adam Smith, says there are now 944 people in the camps, down from a peak of 1515.

He says all bar five have had a primary assessment of their claims for asylum.

Mr Smith says 736 have been judged to be refugees, including 551 Iraqis and 141 Afghans, while he indicates there is strong support for the re-integration package offered to those who have not been granted asylum.

"and IOM (the International Office for Migration) has advised that in total there have been 492 acceptances, comprising 473 Afghans, 10 Iranians, 3 Sri Lankans, 2 Iraqis and four Turks."
