Fiji military commander shortlisted for UN post

The Fiji government has confirmed that the military commander, Rear Admiral Frank Bainimarama, has been shortlisted for a job as the force commander of the United Nations Observer Mission in Kuwait, UNIKOM.

The secretary for home affairs, Colonel Jeremaia Waqanisau, has told the Fiji Sun Newspaper that this is why the former commodore has been promoted to rear admiral.

Colonel Waqanisau says Rear Admiral Bainimarama's promotion has nothing to do with his command in Fiji or his performance in the year 2000 political crisis, but that he had to be of the correct rank before the upcoming interview.
