Ethnic Indian CEO's home stoned in Fiji

2:37 pm on 20 November 2002

The first ethnic Indian to be named chief executive of a Fiji government statutory organisation in many year has had his life threatened and his home stoned.

Chandra Shekhar was recently named to head the Land Transport Authority after being the chief executive of the National Road Safety Council.

The Daily Post says Mr Shekhar has now received telephone calls threatening him to step down or face the consequences.

The newspaper says his immediate family fear for their lives after their Suva home was stoned on Monday night.

Mr Shekhar says he knows who was involved in the stoning but would not disclose their identity.

His office was raided by police soon after his appointment was announced when unnamed people alleged that he was involved in corrupt practices.
