Police in Papua New Guinea are investigating allegations that a Cabinet Minister punched and pointed a pistol at the head of an academic at the University of PNG over the weekend.

Alois Kingsley, who is Minister for Tourism, and his minders are alleged to have also hurled beer bottles and punches at the academic and his car while he and a friend drove off from the Port Moresby Rugby League Club.

The Post Courier newspaper says the Executive Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Kenneth Sumbuk, said he was baffled by what he called an unprovoked attack.

In the National, Mr King says he did not point a pistol at the professor's head, but at the vehicle which was being driven towards him very fast.
