Fiji Methodist Sec. of Evangelism rubbishes burning report

2:15 pm on 5 December 2002

The Fiji Methodist Church's Secretary of Evangelism says reports about villagers in Tailevu province burning down property to get rid of evil spirits are misleading.

The Reverend Apeti Toko denies claims in a Fiji Times report that a house, a village hall and traditional artefacts, said to have been possessed by evil spirits, were burnt in Naila village.

Rev Toko says what happened in the village was a communal agreement to clean up the place as part of a renewal programme, especially with Christmas approaching.

He says he will visit the village in the next day or two, and work with the Methodist church's superintendent in the area, looking in to events.
