The President of Kiribati, President Teburoro Tito, has secured his seat in parliament in the second round of voting, but his government has suffered heavy losses.

Seven Cabinet ministers are among 14 MP's in President Tito's party that have been voted out.

But the final shape of the 42 member parliament is as yet unclear as its not known who many of the new MPs will support.

President Tito needed to win in this round to secure his seat, as he failed to get the fifty per cent needed to win in the first round.

His main rivals, opposition leader, Dr Harry Tong and the country's first President Ieremia Tabai, both won in the initial voting.

The new parliament will meet early in the New Year to select candidates for Presidential elections at the end of January..
