Next Fiji police commissioner tipped to be again drawn from military

Fiji's outgoing police commissioner, Colonel Isikia Savua, is expected to recommend another army officer as his successor.

The Fiji Sun newspaper Col Savua was himself appointed to head the police in 1994 when his former army chief, Sitiveni Rabuka, was prime minister.

But the Sun quotes the home affairs minister, Joketani Cokanasiga, as saying Col Savua is free to recommend anyone of his choice, but the final decision will depend on the constitutional offices commission.

The Qarase government has named Col Savua as Fiji's next ambassador to the United Nations.

His term as police commissioner ends on Sunday and he takes up his new position in January.
