Fiji's two main cities hit by water crisis

7:47 am on 14 December 2002

Fiji's two main cities, Suva and Lautoka, have been hit by a water crisis which is causing severe disruption to daily life.

Surgery has been cancelled at Lautoka hospital and in Suva several high-rise office buildings and factories have had to close and tourists have been forced to leave a hotel.

Tens of thousands of residents in both cities are without water, creating serious health hazards.

The water supply authorities are blaming the problems in Suva on the failure of pumps and leaks in the system while Lautoka's chronic water shortage has been compounded by what has been described as sabotage of mains pipes.
