Australian Police arrive in the Solomons ahead to visit by Australian Foreign Minister

7:55 am on 17 December 2002

Australian Federal Police officers flew into the Solomon Islands last night amid security concerns ahead of a visit by Australian MPs led by the Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer.

Questions over whether the visit should go ahead arose after shots were fired over the house of the Prime Minister, Sir Allan Kemakeza, by special constables seeking payments.

Mr Downer has said that he is deeply concerned by the situation in the Solomon Islands.

Seven parliamentarians will accompany Mr Downer on the trip, which will also include Vanuatu, Samoa and New Zealand.
