7:35 pm on 17 December 2002

The Fiji Peacekeepers Association says it is boycotting this week's celebrations marking the end of 24 years of peackeeping in South Lebanon because of the government's failure to pay the ex-soldiers compensation.

The Association's President, Akuila Rawaqa says the government has not responded to a submission by nearly 1-thousand peacekeepers that they each be paid 5-thousand dollars compensation.

Mr Rawaqa also says the compensaton demand is on top of the association's court action claiming more than 100 million US dollars in what they describe as unpaid allowances since 1978.

Mr Rawaqa says the Qarase administration has not shown goodwill towards the peacekeepers despite it spending over 100 thousand US dollars to hold the celebrations.
