Samoa government and villagers at odds over new hydro scheme

11:07 am on 4 February 2003

The Samoan government's talks with Sili Chiefs over the proposed damming of the village river has stalled over whether the surrounding area should be leased or bought.

The Sili Matai want the government to lease the proposed two thousand square metres dam site for 360 thousand US dollars, plus free electricity.

The government wants to buy the site outright as the proposed hydro-electric project needs World Bank funding, which requires state ownership .

Sili's river and its surrounds cover 80 hectares.
