Solomons government warns western province

6:16 pm on 4 February 2003

The Solomon Islands government has warned the provincial government of Western province that it will be dissolved unless it calls a budget meeting this month.

The directive was issued by the minister in charge of provincial government, Walton Naezon, who says the administration run by Clement Base has had a budget that expired in March last year.

Mr Naezon says the Base government has been running on a contingency warrant that lasted for only four months.

He says since its expiry the Base administration has been disbursing funds illegally.

Mr Naezon says if the meeting is not held by the 20th of this month the pronvicial assembly will be dissolved and a snap election called.
