Solomon Islands foreign minister to visit US ambassador in PNG

4:22 pm on 7 February 2003

The Solomon Islands Foreign Minister will travel to Papua New Guinea next week to hold talks with the United States Ambassador on security issues.

Officials in the Foreign Ministry in Honiara say Laurie Chan will go to Port Moresby to discuss the possiblity of the United States setting up a security office in Honiara.

Mr Chan's trip is being prompted by concerns about the increase of travellers of Middle Eastern origin passing through the country's internatinal airport.

Our correspondent says the visit may also help the Solomon Islands access funds from the US Millenium grant.
