New Caledonia's USTKE union has called for a rally on Saturday against the US plan to invade Iraq.
The union says by staging a demonstration in Noumea it will join an international campaign aimed at preventing a military intervention.
The USTKE president, Gerard Jodar, has appealed for public support, saying the labour movement has a historic role in the struggle for justice and peace in the world.
He says a war on Iraq will only reinforce the power of multinational companies and their ultraliberal approach to running of world affairs to the disadvantage of workers' interests.
