Fiji police have set up a special unit to counter any threats to athletes and officials taking part in this year's South Pacific Games in Suva.

Radio Fiji reports that 263 officers have been assigned to the new unit to look after security at all the games venues.

The divisional police commander southern, Superintendent Romanu Tikotikoca, says they are preparing to combat any threat to athletes, officials and the public during the two week event in June and July.

He says security is a priority for the police force and he assured participating nations they will do their best to ensure law and order is maintained during the games.
