Solomons western province meets budget deadline

4:32 pm on 14 February 2003

The government of Western Province in Solomon Islands has met an ultimatum and called a budget meeting.

This comes after the minister in charge of provincial governments, Walton Naezon, warned the administration run by Clement Base that it would be dissolved.

No details have been released but reports from the provinical capital, Gizo, say a budget has now been drawn up.

The national government was concerned that the province kept operating although its budget had expired in March last year.

Mr Naezon had accused the Base government of disbursing funds illegally because its contingency warrant had lasted for only four months.
